Article Abstract:
Multiplex cinemas face increasingly strict planning regimes following new government guidance restricting out of town developments. Smaller multiplexes of up to six screens are directed mainly to town centres or their edges, but the guidance accepts that major schemes could be combined with existing out of town developments. Town centre cinemas in smaller towns have been affected by the development of multiplexes, but a survey showed that many town centres have retained at least one cinema following the opening of nearby multiplex.
