Testing the water
Article Abstract:
It is now becoming clear that a wide-reaching reassessment of the supply of swimming pools around the world needs to be undertaken, ensuring that the number of swimming pools in each country meets that country's needs and financial resources. Some countries cannot afford the high maintenance costs associated with indoor swimming pools, especially in cases where admission charges are low. Against this background, the current trend towards increasing the provision of indoor swimming pools is misguided.

Sinking or swimming?
Article Abstract:
Swimming is still a popular leisure pursuit, but is being partly replaced by other facilities offered by leisure centres, according to a survey undertaken by Sports Marketing Surveys of 25,000 users at 125 leisure centres in the period 1991-1993. These findings are backed up by a survey undertaken by the Leisure Management Unit at Sheffield University, which found that two thirds of responding authorities had seen a fall in attendances at swimming pools.
