TUI shapes to grow with the European Union at its heart

German tour operator, Touristik Union International GmbH and Company KG, (TUI), now operates across the European Union and it has adopted a central purchasing operation which will enable the company to get better hotel room rates throughout Europe. TUI may expand into Switzerland since the merger of TUI Suisse with Imholz and Vogele Reisen. Tui Austria is also expanding quickly and may soon match its closest competitors, Gulet and Touropa. Tui's market share in Turkey and Egypt is also increasing.

The new Strategy 2001 being adopted by TUI, the second-largest tour operator in Europe, will involve the company both strengthening core tour operator activities within Germany and expanding in neighbouring countries, according to chairman Dr Ralf Corsten. The company purchased Holland International in 1995, and is now looking to acquire further tour operators, hotels and incoming agencies. It plans investment in all areas of activity in 1996.

Belgium ready for TUI swoop
Article Abstract:
Leading Belgian conglomerate Sun International is thought to be looking for a partner to take on the 44% stake in the company currently held by German concern Kaufhof. This could well be German operation TUI, which is thought to be keen to establish a presence in Belgium. TUI has already purchased Kaufhof's 91% stake in Dutch concern Holland International.
