Ernst & Young's recent Leisure Development in Europe Survey shows that Italy is the fifth most popular investment market for Europe's leisure companies. Companies such as Bass Hotels and Resorts are targeting Italy as a key expansion market. The hotel operator will have 30 Holiday Inns in Italy by end-2000, taking the brand to number two in the market. Other growth sectors are food & beverages and cinema.

The number of indoor tennis courts in the UK reached 700 in 1995, and this sector has begun to attract both commercial and public investment. The commercial sector accounts for half of the UK's indoor tennis facilities, with particularly strong development coming from David Lloyd Leisure. Leisure industry operators are now starting to see indoor tennis courts as a key element of their overall provision.

Hong Kong offers a contrast to a beach holiday elsewhere in Asia. Its central financial and office district is dominated by new buildings and there is increased demand for office space. There are few new hotels being built as developers can achieve higher profits in office buildings. Floating restaurants are popular with tourists and Cantonese cooking is the most widespread.
