Thailand is planning to become a major tourist destination, focused around the coming 50th anniversary of King Bhumibhol's ascent to the throne in June 1996. Tourism is Thailand's biggest foreign exchange industry, estimated at some $5.1 billion in 1993. Tourist arrivals stand at around 6 million a year, set to reach 7 million by 1997. Thailand's main tourist markets, which include the US and Australia, account for some 80% of total visitor numbers.

North Thailand is catching up

Northern Thailand is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign visitors. Key destinations include Chiang Mai, which is only an hour's flight from Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Thailand's most northern city, and Mae Hong Son, the capital of the country's most north-western province. It is also worth visiting the triangle formed by the borders of Myanmar, Laos and northern Thailand.
