The impact of Tiananmen Square on China's tourism image
Article Abstract:
The effects of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre on tourism in China were assessed by comparing surveys conducted by the China National Tourist Office in New York prior to (1989) and after (1990) the event. Respondents, who belonged to the mature travel market, were asked to rate 5 categories of attraction attributes and 10 service-related attributes in China. Results showed that although overall mean scores were lower for the 1990 study, only the natural resources category suffered significantly. Only 4 of 10 service attributes were significantly lower, all relating to the hospitality aspect of China's image.
