The long haul
Article Abstract:
Asia's amusement industry has emerged from its initial building phase and is now looking more seriously at projects after several high profile failures. Over 3,000 people attended the 1997 Asian Amusement & International Theme Parks Expo held in Singapore. All aspects of the industry were displayed by 235 companies on 178 stands. Delegates were told that future attractions had to be interactive and provide unique entertainment, noting that some branded goods such as Nike now provide themed entertainment free. Larry Cochran was the driving force behind the growth of US Six Flags Theme Parks. He joined the Texas operation in 1961 and became President in 1985. His appointment as Chairman of IAAPA came in 1997. Six Flags anticipates more than 26 million people visiting the 12 US theme parks in 1997. One of Six Flag's partners is Warner Bros., which provides a wide range of well-known characters for the parks to market. Cochran believes that the theme park industry is well positioned to expand globally to countries such as China, which has no mass entertainment for its people.
