Winning streak
Article Abstract:
Hackney Council in the UK turned around a poor staff performance in its fight to maintain control of four recreation centres in Hackney in 1996. The council had to address problems which included ineffective supervision, poor training and excessive overtime. It established a training programme aimed at creating a flexible and multi-skilled workforce, working towards qualifications which would allow them to supervise a recreation centre, thus reducing supervisors overtime. The staff are now motivated and supportive and costs have been reduced by 33%.

England for excellence
Article Abstract:
The English Tourist Board and the periodical Leisure and Opportunities are joint presenters of the 1988 England for Excellence Tourism Award. The award seeks to challenge the industry to attract and retain high quality staff. One of the best ways to achieve this is to ensure that organisations have effective routes for personal development, with mentoring being a popular option. Effective mentoring needs to be supportive and to deliver the consistent standards that customers expect.
