Publishers' editor Catharine Carver gained a BA degree at Muskingum College in New Concord, OH, in 1943, and by 1945 was working for Reynal and Hitchcock in New York, NY. She was working for Robert Giroux at Harcourt, Brace by the early 1950s, and later became Assistant Editor of the Partisan Review. She gained a reputation as an extremely talented editor, and a number of leading US writers were very keen to work with her. She gave valuable criticism and advice to writers including John Berryman, Saul Bellow and Bernard Malamud.

The override commission practice between airlines and travel agents is a concern to all who feel this unethical deal-making shortchanges customers. The counter argument shows that an extra two percent in commission is not worth it if it means losing customers who may feel they were booked on the wrong airlines to satisfy agents' greed. When agents use favored airlines, they have an advantage in securing reservations because of the preferred-supplier agreements they have with airlines.
