Amprenavir: a new HIV protease inhibitor
Article Abstract:
The FDA has approved amprenavir for the treatment of HIV infection. Sold under the trade name Agenerase, it belongs to a class of drugs called protease inhibitors. These drugs prevent the virus from maturing. It can be used in patients infected with HIV strains that have become resistant to other protease inhibitors. Otherwise, it appears to have no advantage over other protease inhibitors. Side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, rash, and altered body fat distribution.
