Mary Hansen became the first woman to enter the Fairbanks Carnival Dog Derby in 1937 when she took the place of her sick husband. She vowed that if she did not finish last she would enter again. She did not, so she entered the following two years, finishing sixth and seventh.

Bethel Puhl: mosquito taxidermist
Article Abstract:
Puhl makes souvenirs by embalming mosquitos and placing the in paperweights, key chains and earrings. She has several different kinds of resin for embalming different flowers and bugs, but will not reveal what she feeds the pests to fatten them before she kills them.
