Saved from the fire: sleepy Slovenia has escaped Yugoslavia's carnage

Slovenia reminds US citizens of the 1960s with low prices in restaurants, hotels and sports activities. Beautiful scenery and natural history are still available to tourists, but because of civil unrest in the former Yugoslavia local citizens think the situation may be temporary.

Among the lesser seen attractions in Rome are the Botanical Garden at Janiculum Hill, the Villa Farnesina retreat where Cleopatra once stayed, the Protestant Cemetery, the Campo dei Fiori outdoor market and the Mattatoio in the Testaccio quarter. Other spots are described.

Between fire and ice
Article Abstract:
A trip to Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park, CA, is described. Yosemite Valley was formed by the movement of glaciers, which gouged out the softer parts of the rocks to expose granite faces such as El Capitan. The views from Glacier Point are spectacular.
