Americans are much in favor of historic preservation and more places are preserving their historic sites, which have gotten a huge increase in tourism, showing the growing desire of Americans to get in touch with their past. Historic sites nationwide and preservation efforts are described.

Many wealthy Americans in the period between the Civil War and World War I went on trips to Europe as a way of absorbing Old World culture and to be accepted by the European aristocracy. Some even sought to marry off their daughters to European noblemen.
