Shaktoolik retreat: skiing the serum run trail from Nenana to Nome

Article Abstract:

Skiers can recreate the 764-mile trip from Nenana to Nome, AK, made by a relay of sled dog teams in 1925 to deliver serum to treat diphtheria, but the journey can prove to be treacherous. One man who attempted the trip addresses why he turned back to the town of Shaktoolik, AK, when the weather was severe, and how it resulted in a good ending. The Iditarod dog race follows the same path.

A description of a trip to the Canwell Glacier in Alaska to try and determine the impact of the magnitude 7.9 earthquake that hit the region in 2002. While the earthquake was the largest to hit Earth in 2002, nobody was killed, although a 200-mile furrow was ripped through the tundra, rock and ice of Alaska.
