A meeting of parallel paths for US fusion?
Article Abstract:
The US Congress has reversed its position on research into magnetic confinement fusion and into inertial confinement fusion. It has become less interested in magnetic fusion, but has supported the $1.5 billion National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California, a large new inertial confinement fusion experiment. The magnetic confinement fusion programme and the inertial confinement fusion programmes have many common technical requirements, and leaders of the two programmes have been collaborating to create a medium-term plan for the Dept of Energy's Fusion Energy Sciences programme, which has supported magnetic confinement fusion.

US Congress looks set to scuttle international fusion project
Article Abstract:
The future of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, which aims to design and construct a prototype fusion reactor, seems uncertain. The deal to design ITER has expired, and a three-year extension may not be agreed unless the US is willing to participate, along with Russia, Japan and the European Union. The US Congress is on the point of passing legislation aiming to ensure that the US is no longer involved in the ITER project. Nevertheless, a group of 20 scientists is going ahead with two tasks assigned by the ITER council.

Panel backs closure of US fusion machine
Article Abstract:
The Dept. of Defense's Fusion Energy Advisory Committee recommends to closure of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor at Princeton, NJ. The committee also suggests that the national fusion research program be refocused on basic plasma physics and materials science. The proposals were immediately accepted by Office of Energy Research Dir. Martha Krebs and are expected to become the basis for Congressional discussions scheduled for Mar. 1996 on a scaled-back US fusion research program.
