A nanotube molecular tool
Article Abstract:
Scanning force microscopes fixed with a single carbon nanotube at its tip can gain access to deeper crevices of surface structure than can the pyramidal tip of a standard device. The nanotube tool of a known molecular structure provides the facility to analyze molecular-scale samples and control the tip-sample interaction. The nanotube tip is attached by bringing in contact a glue-coated larger probe with a bundle of nanotubes. A single tube is left stuck on the probe's end when it is pulled away. Nanotube tips can survive crashes with the surface by bending and they are conductive.

The surface force apparatus - a tool for probing molecular protein interactions
Article Abstract:
The surface force apparatus (SFA) enables scientists to identify biological and non-biological systems' fundamental forces through measuring distance dependence and magnitude of the molecular forces between two surfaces. Electrostatic properties, molecular recognition and membrane surfaces' dynamics are some events studied through the SFA.

A tool, not a tyrant
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the use of mechanisms by scientists to explain or model scientific theories. The focus of physicists on mechanical explanations for their observations is discussed.
