A neuronal learning rule for sub-millisecond temporal coding
Article Abstract:
A hebbian learning rule achieves the required degree of coherence in the spike arrival times in the neurons of the laminar nucleus in the barn owl auditory system. The integrate-and-fire neuron spiking due to excitatory postsynaptic potentials with a width at half-maximum height of 250 microseconds, has an accuracy of 25 microseconds with coherent presynaptic signals. The learning rule selects the correct delays from two independent input groups. Computer simulations show that the temporal precision of output spikes may be independent of the membrane time constant.

Design for sieving
Article Abstract:
A computer model developed by D.W. Lewis et al. helps to design structure directing agents (SDAs) that determine the organic structure in zeolite synthesis. The crystal structures of zeolites and zeolite-like molecular sieves have voids with precise and uniform sizes, and SDAs grow the organic molecules to fit the desired void. The computer model is effective in searching for appropriate and less expensive SDAs which are helpful in designing high-silica zeolites. The method is also effective in generating many theoretical models and design new zeolites.

A three-dimensional self-consistent computer simulation of a geomagnetic field reversal
Article Abstract:
A three-dimensional, self-consistent computer simulation of a 40,000 year magnetic field geodynamo can help to understand the geomagnetic reversal mechanism. Several polarity excursions and a dipole moment reversal at the simulation's completion are accomplished. There are some similarities between the characteristics of the simulated magnetic field reversal and real reversals of the geomagnetic field.
