A role of her own: female cowbirds, 'Molothrus ater', influence the development and outcome of song learning
Article Abstract:
An investigation is conducted into the behaviour of female cowbirds, specifically the influence of the female during the learning process as the male birds work through subsong, to plastic song, to stereotyped song. The results indicate that females can encourage the progression of song learning.

The case for developmental ecology
Article Abstract:
Developmental ecology is the study of the ontogenetic interactions between organisms, contexts and behaviors. The courtship and communication in brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus ater, are studied to show the pronounced variations found in the patterns of reproductive behavior.

Visual and song nuclei correlate with courtship skills in brown-headed cowbirds
Article Abstract:
The variation in courtship success of the male brown-headed cowbird, Molothrus ater, is associated to variation in two areas of its brain. These are the song control nucleus or area X and the thalamic visual area or nucleus rotundus. The volume of area X is not related with song potency and rate of vocalizing, while the volume nucleus rotundus is correlated with song potency, courtship persistence and vocalizing to females. These findings suggest that use of song by the male brown-headed cowbird depends on integration of vocal, auditory and visual information.
