Resistance is spreading rapidly, particularly in hospitals, where many different bacterial strains can meet each other and where antibiotics are heavily used. "Unless things change soon, we are going to face a major health crisis," warns Brad Spellberg, an infectious-disease researcher at Harbor-UCLA medical centre in Los Angeles and lead author on the study.
