AZA species survival plan profile: orangutans
Article Abstract:
The majority of AZA-member zoos in North America have joined the Species Survival Plan (SSP) to save orangutans subspecies. Orangutans from Borneo and Sumatra differ from each other in terms of their hair color and texture, facial shape and cheek flange size. The SSP disallows interbreeding between orangutan subspecies and aims to have self-sustaining Bornean and Sumatra orangutans. Knowledge and awareness regarding orangutans can be improved by distributing comprehensive husbandry manual on the animals' enrichment, diet, sociality, genetics and exhibit design.
