Activation without a vital ingredient(transcription of protein-coding genes)
Article Abstract:
Activation of many yeast genes are independent of the TATA-binding protein associated factors (TAFs). One reason can be that another transcription component act as the target for the activator or that only promoters lacking conventional TATA box need them for gene activation. TAF inactivation or elimination causes cell death but gene activation remain unaffected. TAF elimination causes reduction in transcription of a small number of promoters having unconventional TATA elements. TAF elimination also induces cell death due to its cell-cycle regulatory role in eukaryotic cells.

A mammalian SRB protein associated with an RNA polymerase II holoenzyme
Article Abstract:
A human homologue of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae SRB7 gene was isolated and purified to characterize a mammalian RNA polymerase II holoenzyme with the general transcription factors TFIIE and TFIIH. Gel filtration chromatography of crude extracts of the mammalian SRB7 and RNA polymerase complex appeared to purify at coelution over two columns. Further experiments also revealed that the haloenzyme was suppressed more by PC4 and HMG2 in the absence of activators and reacted more when tested with the coactivators compared to the core RNA polymerase II.

A kinase-cyclin pair in the RNA polymerase II holoenzyme
Article Abstract:
The isolation of two new SRB genes and observation of the gene function reveals that the SRB kinases are actively involved in II carboxy-terminal domain (CTD) phosphorylation. The active involvement is enhanced by the response of the kinases to transcriptional regulators. The nature of functioning of the SRB reveals that the SRB proteins are made up of a kinase-cyclin pair.
