Issues concerning South African president Thabo Mbeki's refusal to acknowledge that HIV causes AIDS are discussed. Scientists are concerned that Mr. Mbeki's stance will increase mother-to-child transmission of the disease.

An international declaration stating that HIV causes AIDS has been signed by 5,000 scientist about 400 of whom are independent African scientists. The policy of South African president Thabo Mbeki to deny the link between AIDS and HIV is criticised.
