Analysis of the finescale timing of repeated signals: does shell rapping in hermit crabs signal stamina?
Article Abstract:
Shell rapping in hermit crabs, Pagurus bernhardus, is a costly activity that appears to signal capability, according to research making the first analysis of the within-bout temporal pattern of a repeated aggressive signal. There was a general trend for the gap duration to increase within a bout, but there was an initial decrease. It is possible that two raps are required to initiate a positive feedback that then permits more rapid movement. It appears that vigour and the stamina of the initiator are the main determinants of victory.

Rapid change in energy status in fighting animals: Causes and effects of strategic decisions
Article Abstract:
The energy status of fighting animals is related to the preceding activities by interrupting their fights at specific points. It is found that changes in physiological status appeared much earlier than the changes in behavior that they may have caused and some physiological changes might have affected rather than the cause of fight decisions.

Do males of the great grey shrike, Lanius excubitor, trade food for extrapair copulations?
Article Abstract:
An investigation on the courtship feeding in the great prey shrike is presented. The results reveal that food offered by males to extrapair females has significantly higher energy value than that offered to the social mates.
