Antiviral drugs fit for a purpose
Article Abstract:
The crystal structures of enzymes from the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 neuraminidases bound to the antiviral drugs have revealed a cavity in the active site of certain neuraminidase subtypes that could be exploited to make more effective antiviral drugs. It is very important to find the binding strength of the neuraminidase inhibitors for each new strain of influenza virus, even if the amino-acid sequence of the neuraminidase active site is unchanged compared with that of existing viruses.

An X-ray-induced insulator-metal transition in a magnetoresistive manganite
Article Abstract:
The transition of a manganite compound Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 from an insulating antiferromagnetic state to a metallic ferromagnetic state, is driven by X-ray illumination at low temperatures. The effects described give an insight into physical mechanisms of persistent photoconductivity, opening the way for further experiments studying the degree of dependence on photon energy. The properties of the manganites could be useful in X-ray lithography and detection, with further development of their unique properties.
