Applying metapopulation theory to conservation of migratory birds
Article Abstract:
Metapopulation theory can be applied to migratory species by identifying demographically independent subpopulations, even as they move during the annual cycle and potentially co-occur with other subpopulations. Spatial and temporal modes of subpopulation independence that can interact with behavioral mechanisms to create demographically independent subpopulations are demonstrated using examples of migratory bird species.

Response of avian communities to historic habitat change in the northern Chihuahuan Desert
Article Abstract:
A study of the vegetation and avian communities in a grassland habitat type and four desert shrubland types is presented that will examine how breeding-bird communities have changed in response to habitat conversion from grassland to desert shrubland. Species richness was higher in desert shrubland than grassland while avian abundance patterns differed among the four desert shrubland habitat types.

Source-sink dynamics of a declining Eastern Kingbird population and the value of sink habitats
Article Abstract:
A demographic model is employed to identify the underlying causes of the decline of an Eastern Kingbird population breeding in the Charlotte Valley of central New York. Results of the model indicated that the decline of Eastern Kingbirds throughout the northeastern parts of their range is related to either declining adult survivorship or increased frequency of permanent emigration.
