Arbitrary and capricious species conservation
Article Abstract:
The Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt has been described as 'arbitrary and capricious' in recent federal court decisions on listing species under the Endagnered Species Act of 1973. Cases involving the Canada lynx and the Barton Springs salamander are examples. Political actions in the Department of the Interior and the Fish and Wildlife Service have undermined efforts of USFWS biologists to add species to the endangered list.

Current and potential ranges of three exotic goldenrods (Solidago) in Europe
Article Abstract:
The potential distributions of the three exotic goldenrods Solidago altissima, S. gigantean, and S. graminifolia in Europe are estimated using the homoclime analysis approach. Results indicate that both S.altissima and S. gigantean have a high potential to expand their current ranges and it is estimated that larger parts of Europe are climatically suitable to S. graminifolia.
