Australia lifts ban on cloning
Article Abstract:
A bill was passed in Australia by the Senate and the lower house on 12 December 2006 to lift the ban on research that involves therapeutic cloning that would give researchers in Australia a chance to join the small number of groups engaged in the procedure worldwide. A committee chaired by John Lockhart, a Sydney lawyer, had reviewed Australia's 2002 cloning act, and its findings stressing the potential value of therapeutic cloning but prohibiting the production of human embryonic stem cells by injecting human donor cells into animal eggs, are reflected in the bill.
