Austrian gene food petition puts pressure on European partners
Article Abstract:
Twenty percent of the population of Austria have signed a petition, organised by the Austrian ministry of internal affairs, to ban genetically modified food and patents on plants and animals. A summit meeting has now been called by Chancellor Victor Klima, to discuss the list of specific demands made by the non-governmental organizations who initiated the petition. They include a ban on the inclusion of genetically modified ingredients in local produce, and the government's response could have a significant influence on EU genetic engineering policies.

Race claims spark fury over Croatia's school curriculum
Article Abstract:
Croatian scientists are displeased, as they believe that their science minister Dragan Primorac is getting schoolteachers to promote the view that Croats are only distantly related to other Slavic populations such as the Serbs. The claim that there are racial differences between Croats and Slavs is not accepted by geneticists and is potentially incendiary in the Balkan region, torn apart by civil war.

Prison talk
Article Abstract:
Didier Barret, an astrophysicist, gives lectures to the prisoners of Muret Prison, near Toulouse, France on astronomy, cosmology, theories of matter, space and time. These lectures proved so effective that the prison authorities demanded a second series this year and another prison in the area has persuaded Barret to arrange a lecture series for it as well.
