Avalanche mixing of granular solids
Article Abstract:
A geometric method-based analysis of the mixing of solid particles, which is a crucial process during the production of several substances, involves the classification of the mechanism of particle mixing to geometric and dynamic components. Only monodisperse particles are considered by this model, which ignores interparticle reactions. This assumed two-dimensional flow considers the transport of particle from one wedge of a quasi-two-dimensional mixture to another through an avalanche. Further inclusion of the more complex mechanisms involved in solid mixing may enable improvement of the model.

Spontaneous chaotic granular mixing
Article Abstract:
Experimental mixing patterns in small tumblers partly filled with fine glass beads were produced. Numerical results were generated from a periodically forced continuum model. The grains were identical in both experiment and model, apart from colour. A periodic stick-slip behaviour occured in the shear layer separating static and flowing regions, causing the beads to mix at rates exceeding those previously achieved.

Article Abstract:
Granular materials flow and mix during handling, but understanding of such processes is fairly limited. A new model of vibrating granular material, focusing on dissipation and the random nature of grain collision shows complex and unexpected wave patterns of hexagons, stripes and squares. Details of the model are presented.
