Bacterial chromatin organization by H-NS protein unravelled using dual DNA manipulation
Article Abstract:
An optical tweezers instrument was used to investigate the abundant non-specific nucleoid-associated protein H-NS and show that H-NS is dynamically organized between two DNA molecules in register with their helical pitch. The results explain how the bacterial nucleoid could be effectively compacted and organized but be dynamic in nature and accessible to DNA-tracking motor enzymes an approach which could be widely applicable to other DNA bridging proteins as well as to complex DNA interactions involving multiple DNA molecules.

A ubiquitous thermoacidophilic archaeon from deep-sea hydrothermal vents
Article Abstract:
The isolation and cultivation of a member of the deep-sea hydrothermal vent euryarchaeotic 2 9DHVE2 group, which is an obligate thermoacidophilic sulphur- or iron-reducing heterotroph capable of growing from pH 3.3 to 5.8 and between 55 and 75 degrees Celsius is reported. The isolate is shown to constitute up to 15% of the archaeal population, providing evidence that thermoacidophiles may be key players in the sulphur and ion cycling at deep-sea vents.

Eukaryotic evolution, changes and challenges
Article Abstract:
A study of mitochondrial genomes in relation to importance of endosymbiosis in eukaryotic evolution and aerobic and anaerobic eukaryotes intermingling is presented. The persistence of mitochondrially derived organelles in all eukaryotes, and plastids in some lineages, provides phylogeny-independent evidence for the occurrence of those symbiotic events but independent evidence for the participation of other prokaryotic endosymbionts is lacking.
