Bidirectional communication between the brain and the immune system: implications for behaviour
Article Abstract:
It has begun to become clear that the communication pathways between the central nervous system (CNS) and immune system are bidirectional. The immune system is able to produce products that can signal to the CNS, significantly changing neural activity and thus behaviour. The immune system could act as a diffuse sense organ, informing the CNS about developments in the body connected with infection and injury. These immune-to-brain links could have particular relevance to behaviour. Recent research indicates that events in the immune system have a strong influence on mood and cognition.

Impact of geographical origin on mating behaviour in two species of Biomphalaria (Planorbidae: Gastropoda)
Article Abstract:
Research using three Biomphalaria pfeifferi strains and three Biomphalaria glabrata strains indicates that both snail species mate more often with sympatric than allopatric snails. This seems to be the first direct observation of planorbid snails selecting mates on the basis of their geographical origin. It appears that the point of optimal outbreeding is situated close to the local population, if mate choice behaviour is perfectly adaptive.
