A wide spread political acceptance is there that the European Research Council (ERC), which is the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, should be established as a funding body for the continent's researchers in the science and humanities. The ERC is expected to be a competitive organization for bottom-up basic research, funding researchers from across all disciplines and from across the continent, solely based on excellence.

Across China's frontier
Article Abstract:
China has become the preferred place for international firms to open research labs and Japan is leading the way. In 2005, Mizuho surveyed almost 1400 medium and large industrial firms in Japan and found that more than 250 had already established research labs in China, while only 116 had done so in the US.

Plans for establishment of a new health-research institute in the Guangzhou is described. Reforms of China's biomedical research infrastructure including the establishment of a Chinese version of the main US biomedical research agency, the National Institute of Health (NIH) is discussed.
