Breaking the chain of addiction
Article Abstract:
Pilla and colleagues have extended research on drug addiction by presenting a new approach to pharmacotherapy for the treatment of cocaine addiction. A selective partial agonist for D(sub3) receptors, BP 897, has been developed and is shown to act preferentially at D(sub3) receptors. It has the characteristics of a partial agonist and may act as a weak agonist or an antagonist depending on dopamine amounts in the D(sub3) receptors. They used a behavioural model measuring the secondary reinforcing effects of drugs to test BP 897 and found that it selectively reduced the behavioural response for cocaine-related stimuli in an initial 15 minute period.

Drug addiction: bad habits add up
Article Abstract:
It is now widely recognized that drug dependence and addiction can be partly seen as gradual adaptations of the brain to chronic drug exposure. These adaptations could be sparked off by a drive to control activity of the various brain systems withing certain specified activity limits. In order to assess how the neurochemical and molecular changes caused by drug exposure are connected with the clinical reality of human drug addiction, it is necessary to know how addiction operates at the cognitive, behavioural and neuropsychological levels. It is clear that there are many complex factors that may influence addiction and its treatment.

Equity and addiction
Article Abstract:
There is a strong demand in the rich societies for legalizing the use of recreational drugs. Drugs such as marijuana, if used moderately, are no more harmful than cigarettes or alcohol. Legalizing such drugs would also considerably affect the income of all those who profit from the illegal sales of the prohibited drugs. It has been opined that there is no guarantee, however, for the moderate use of the drug.
