Brent Spar: when science is not to blame
Article Abstract:
The victory of Greenpeace over Shell Oil Co. in a waste disposal issue again exhibited the difficulty in acquiring public approval of the legality of risk assessment methods employed. The risk assessment plan of Shell included weighing environmental and scientific factors along with health and safety hazards, plus economic aspects. Nevertheless, the detailed procedure outlined by Shell was not convincing enough for critics. Greenpeace also accused Shell of not optimizing the services of science research centers and of classifying important data.

Spain's universities split over merits of performance table
Article Abstract:
A study funded by Spain's Ministry of Education and Culture has ranked the country's 44 public universities. Overall, older universities were ranked significantly higher than newer ones. The newer universities believe that the survey used outdated criteria, and are particularly concerned about the failure to take into account relationships with private companies. The Council of Rectors of the Spanish Universities is to set up a commission to assess the quality of universities, but not draw up any form of ranking.
