Britain plays it cautious on animal-human transplants
Article Abstract:
A delay on xenotransplantation has been announced by the UK following the report of an advisory group set up to examine the ethics involved in the issue. The moratorium was imposed in view of the uncertainty about the safety of xenotransplantation, or the use of animal tissue for human surgery. The report of the ethics panel, which is headed by Kings College professor of medical law and ethics Ian Kennedy, said no ethical reasons preclude such animal-human transplants, but several issues must be addressed before conducting trials. These include the potential threat of retroviruses and a regulatory framework for the protection of patients.

A call to action from the lab bench
Article Abstract:
Basic researchers in the UK are not actively involved in the formulation of science policy. Common reasons for their lack of interest in policy-making include lack of time, the need to concentrate on their work and teaching, and the belief that they will not be able to influence policy. British scientists must not only familiarize themselves with science policy, but must work actively to influence the development of such policy.
