Budget woes cast chill on French research
Article Abstract:
Researchers at French publicly funded science institutes are worried about budget cuts in 1996. The Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) has been facing a heavy deficit due to government's failure to provide promised funding, which amounted to FFr1 billion in 1994. CNRS has asked for the money held by its laboratories to facilitate the elimination of some old programs, as requested by the government. In return, the government will pay an extra FFr227.7 million in 1996. Other cost reduction strategies of CNRS are discussed.

French researchers brace for budget cuts
Article Abstract:
The French government has proposed a 1.4% reduction in the budget for civilian research. If passed, the FY 1996 budget for civilian research will go down from 53.1 billion francs in 1995 to 52.3 billion. The planned budget cuts have not incited concern from French scientists. Most scientists expressed concern over the government's plan to fix the rate of recruitment for research staffs at 2.5% of the existing number.
