Burdens of proof of misconduct
Article Abstract:
A strong monitoring organization and the independent investigations of complaints are necessary to eliminate misconduct in research. The US, Denmark and Australia have established organizations to handle misconduct in research. However, there has been a lack of response from countries such as Germany, Italy, France, and the UK. The Ryan report of the United States Commission on Research Integrity proposes establishing support for research ethics and methods to deal with misconduct complaints. However, critics are against the high costs that these changes would require.

Brazilian researcher protests against 'plagiarism' fine
Article Abstract:
Carlos Augusto Pereira, a researcher at the Instituto Butantan, Sao Paulo, Brazil, has protested the $50,000 fine imposed on him for plagiarism in the research on the cytoplasmic effects of the rabies virus in a McCoy cell line. Yeda Lopes Nogueira, a research scholar at the Instituto Adolfo Lutz, claims to have discovered the cytoplasmic effect before Pereira. Pereira's lawyer argues that research pursued by him was independent of Nogueira's work. However, Nogueira's lawyer argues that Pereira had known the result of the research work before his work was published.
