Call to scrap licences for travel to Cuba
Article Abstract:
The American Association for the Advancement of Science has expressed concern about the impact of strict travel regulations on scientific cooperation between Cuba and the US. It is common for the US Dept of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control to prevent scientific researchers from the US travelling to Cuba, while Cuban scientists also find it very hard to obtain entry visas to the US. Some scientists are angry that officials at the Office of Foreign Assets Control have no scientific knowledge on which to base their assessment of the legitimacy of proposed trips to Cuba.

Britain weighs plan to axe US science mission
Article Abstract:
The British government is currently assessing its plan of closing down the science and technology department of the British Embassy in the US. The plan sprang up after a routine government inspection but was blocked by UK science minister William Waldegrave. Both parties have reached a compromise to reduce the department's operations instead of a complete closure. However, supporters of the department fear that this move would only weaken it and eventually lead to its closure.

US spirit is willing, but funds are still weak
Article Abstract:
Scientists in the US are giving high priority to international collaboration. However the US government will only spend a fraction of its planned $75 billion on research and development, on collaboration with foreigners. Many scientists assume that the main barrier to substantial US investment in international science are the isolationists in the Congress, but congressional staff claim that scientific agencies have not sought funding for international work.
