Cattle egrets are less able to cope with light refraction than are other herons
Article Abstract:
Most herons have to be able to correct their vision for light refraction when they are trying to catch submerged prey. This is the case for the little egret and squacco heron, for example. The cattle egret does not forage in the water, but on land, and is less successful in compensating for light refraction when seeking prey under water. This may be because the cattle egret is becoming less able to forage for prey under water as it becomes more dependent on terrestrial prey.

How selfish is a cuckoo chick?
Article Abstract:
Beging displays of Cuculus canorus, cuckoos, have been observed, as nestlings reared in reed warbler nests. Cucckoo nestlings' begging calls are unusually rapid. This rapidity is not in order to avoid rejection, but is to seek food and varies in line with the chick's hunger. Cuckoos do not have greater food requirements than the host brood. They have one gape, which is a deficient visual signal compared with a reed warbler brood, and the rapid call compensates for this.
