Central-place foraging continues beyond the nest entrance: The underground performance of leaf-cutting ants
Article Abstract:
Tissue transfer between chambers, hoisting, cleaning and shredding of fragments on the fungal gardens was studied by using laboratory colonies of Atta colombica housed in transparent nests. It was observed that leaf fragment size had strong effects on all the processes except hoisting fragment on to the garden and time spent on underground activities were greater than the time used to retrieve it from a vegetation source.

Foraging behaviour and colony structure in ants
Article Abstract:
Eight Nests of the Myrmica punctriventis ants were collected for laboratory study. Videotapes analysed on a motion analysis machine allowed large amounts of data to be gathered in a short period of time. Results indicate that worker-ant behavior is influenced by nest size. Nest size is linked to demands placed on foraging ants (colony hunger), and seems to have a greater effect on search behavior.
