Central reorganization of sensory pathways following peripheral nerve regeneration in fetal monkeys
Article Abstract:
The somatosensory system during the initial stages of development has mechanisms that give young animals the capacity to regain perceptual abilities after peripheral nerve transection. Defective sensory inputs after median nerve repair in monkeys fail to impair the topographic representation of the innervated skin in the primary somatosensory cortex. However, median nerve cuts or repair in adults result in errors in the peripheral nerve inputs and the cortical representation of the reinnervated skin.
