Pitfalls in the categorization of behaviour: a comparison of dolphin whistle classification methods
Article Abstract:
A study conducted by Janik and Slater led to the conclusion that human-led visual inspection of frequency spectrograms is an effective method of classifying dolphin whistles. To evaluate the effectiveness of new alterative methods, the data used by Janik and Slater in their study were borrowed. This new method for classifying dolphin whistles is computer-based and include the strategy developed by McCowan, the comparison of cross-correlation coefficients through hierarchical cluster analysis and the identification ofthe average differences in absolute frequency.

Contexts and possible functions of barking in roe deer
Article Abstract:
Most members of the Cervidae family bark but its function is ill understood. A new study investigates the possible functions of barking in free-ranging roe deer, Capreolus capreolus, to test the hypotheses that it is an alarm call, a territorial call or a pursuit-deterrent call. The study suggests that barking may have originally evolved as a predator deterrent but has gained a secondary role in territorial defence.
