Characterizing the mating behavious of the Tamesi molly, Poecilia latipunctata, a sailfin with shortfin morphology
Article Abstract:
The mating behavioural profiles of dark and silver male Poecilia latipunctata is characterized by varying the competitive environment and the degree of female receptivity, where both factors are known to increase rates of courtship displays in sailfin species and the rates of courtship displays are strongly influenced by female receptive state. Dark males actively compete for receptive females by increasing their reliance on courtship, a behavioural response clearly characteristic of other sailfin molly species.

Interspecific mate choice in sailfin and shortfin species of mollies
Article Abstract:
Interspecific mate choice in three species of mollies, Poecilia latipinna, P. orri and P. mexicana, was investigated to determine patterns of male choice in the females of these species. The males of these species exhibit differences in morphology and behavior. P. latipinna females consistently chose male conspecifics. On the other hand, while females of either P. orri and P. mexicana also chose conspecifics, they chose P. latipinna males over heterospecific shortfin species in the absence of a cospecific male.

Inter-population variation in male mating behaviours in the sailfin mollie, Poecilia latipinna
Article Abstract:
A study on the sexual behavior of 6 different populations of male sailfin mollie (Poecilia latipinna) fails to show a consistent positive relationship between body size and rates of different sexual behaviors. Rates of courtship behavior, gonopodial thrusting, and gonoporal nibbling vary independently of one another, implying little influence of body size. The complex variation between populations in sexual behavior suggests the difference between populations in the level of behavioral allometry.
