Mining the secrets of the egg
Article Abstract:
Alan Trounson, a stem-cell researcher from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, wants to treat neurodegenerative disease by using eggs to create cells that match a patient's genetic make-up, a technique known as therapeutic cloning. The ultimate dream is to create specialized types of cells such as insulin-producing cells or heart cells to treat diseases such as diabetes or to repair damaged hearts or other organs.

Conservation at a distance: A gentle way to age
Article Abstract:
Flakes of skin naturally shed by whales when they launch themselves out of the water or slap their tail fins on the surface may be a non-invasive source of information of the age of the whales. This non-lethal way of determining whales' ages would also enable biologists to model population dynamics, and study whether their mating tactics and associations with each other change with age.
