New Russian funding cuts spark protests from researchers
Article Abstract:
The Russian cabinet plans to reduce science funding in 1998 by 26.5% as part of a range of public economies. This has led to protests from Russian scientists organized by the Russian co-ordinating committee of the scientific collectives (RCC). RCC chairman Valery Sobolev believes that many people will lose their jobs and there will be no prospect of the previously promised higher wages. The Russian Foundation for Fundamental Research and the Russian humanitarian scientific founds are likely to see their current budgets reduced by half.
