Reunification grant shake-up threatens jobs
Article Abstract:
A number of government support schemes established in Germany after its reunification in 1990 are to expire leaving hundreds of scientists in East Germany jobless. The job cuts are based on the suggestions made by the Wissenschaftsrat, Germany's science council, which is keen on reorganizing the institutes on the lines of Western institutes. This will encourage research grants rather than a dependence on institutional funding. However, the Wissenschaftsrat has admitted that core funding of East German institutes is necessary to help the transition to a competition environment, but the ministry of education and research has refused funding.

Germany divided on a single academy: Germany is developing plans for a national academy of sciences but the country's regional academies and a learned society have differing ideas
Article Abstract:
A paper by Dieter Simon, president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, recommends that the creation of a new national academy of sciences in Germany would end the battle between many regional science academies who are seeking to become the national voice. However, the other academies feel that a national academy should be based on the Conference of Academies, an umbrella organization. The Leopoldina Academy of Scientists, formed in 1652, also believes that it should form the basis of a national academy, based on its long history.

Industry beckons Benelux's brightest
Article Abstract:
Job prospects for scientists in the Benelux countries - the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium - are varied. There is very strong competition for academic posts in the Netherlands, with permanent positions at universities being rare. However, well-qualified scientists find it quite easy to gain employment in industry or administration. In Belgium, there is only limited investment in scientific research, although the country has strengths in life sciences and medical research.
