US supercomputer centres to concentrate on networking
Article Abstract:
The National Science Foundation is funding the development of a supercomputer network which will provide US university researchers with increased computing power. Supercomputer centres at the University of California at San Diego and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will receive approximately $30 mil US each year to maintain the networked computer system. Access to other supercomputers at US nuclear weapons laboratories will also be provided. The NSF will stop funding supercomputer projects in Pennsylvania and New York.

Scientists urged to turn their attentions to nuclear waste
Article Abstract:
The Department of Energy (DOE) is inviting grant applications from scientists for developing novel methods to clean up nuclear wastes. The cost of the clean up program could be $1000 bil and it may take around 75 years to achieve the target. Around $20 mil will be granted to university research groups and $20 mil will support (DOE) laboratories. Grants will be given to researchers in geophysics, biology, chemistry, and other related fields with the potential to eliminate nuclear wastes.
