Cloning and characterization of the thyroid iodide transporter
Article Abstract:
A complementary DNA clone encoding the Na+/I- symporter (NIS) has been isolated and cloned. The iodide-transporting molecule is believed to be the first to have its cDNA cloned, bridging a gap in the thyroid hormone biosynthesis pathway. The characterization of NIS is important for the analysis of the molecular basis of radiation-induced thyroid tumorogenesis, the congenital defect in I- accumulation and thyroid immune disorders.

Taking up iodide in breast tissue
Article Abstract:
New research shows that the transmembrane carrier protein, sodium-iodide importer, is responsible for transport of iodide into epithelial cells of normal lactating breast and breast cancer cells, as well as into thyroid cells.

The Syk tyrosine kinase suppresses malignant growth of human breast cancer cells
Article Abstract:
New research suggests that the protein tyrosine kinase Syk has the potential to modulate epithelial cell growth and may suppress tumours in human breast carcinomas.
