Sniffing and smelling: separate subsystems in the human olfactory cortex
Article Abstract:
Research shows that sniffing causes oscillation activity in the olfactory bulb of the cortex, leading to piriform cortex stimulation. The amount of oxygen in the blood stream directly affects the degree of piriform response that sniffing achieves, according to nuclear magnetic resonance imaging experiments. The piriform cortex of the temporal lobe is one of the brain areas most affected by the sniffing response.

Picture the smell
Article Abstract:
Scientists have developed a new 'smell-seeing' device based on colour changes that take place in gas-sensitive metalloporphyrin dyes, allowing for the identification of different smells by eye.

A colorimetric sensor array for odour visualization
Article Abstract:
A new, optical chemical sensing method for detecting odours is described. The new system is based on vapour-sensitive metalloporphyrin dyes and generates a colour fingerprint for each odorant.
