Healing the spirit: to restore bison to tribal lands is to restore hope to Indian people
Article Abstract:
The InterTribal Bison Cooperative is a project to restore the herds of bison that once flourished in the lands inhabited by High Plains Native Americans. The cooperative has grown to include 40 tribes in 17 states and manages more than 8,000 animals. Its efforts go beyond conventional buffalo ranching to encompass restoring the entire habitat of the bison. The project also has cultural goals of reviving the mythic connection between Native Americans and the bison.

The egg man: a biologist's mating game helps restore shad to the Potomac
Article Abstract:
An extraction and fertilization technique developed by biologist Jim Cummins may help revive the American shad fish population in the Potomac River. Cummins catches females, deposits their roe in bowls, then adds milt from captured males which fertilizes the eggs. The mixture is sent to a hatchery for ideal germinating conditions and protection from natural predators.
